Cities have been evolving for centuries as centres of culture, commerce, creativity, and change. They are now places where an increasing majority of the population in the twenty-first century live, work, and play. They are the world’s economic engines, required to manage increasing flows of people, goods, information, and capital.

While they are currently the source of most of the world’s environmental problems, they also possess an incredible capacity for transformation.
